​Public Speaking

October 15, 2018 @ 5 pm

4-H Junior / Intermediate (3rd - 8th Grade)


​1.  This category is for individual presentations only. The 4-H member presents a 5-7 minute talk suitable as a platform

     speech or radio broadcast. Props and visual aids are not permitted and recordings of any type may not be used.  

     Contestants should be prepared to answer questions concerning the subject matter of their presentations.

     Presentations will be scored with equal consideration of composition and delivery utilizing a score-sheet specific to the

     Public Speaking Contest.

​2.  4-H members in 3rd – 8th grades are eligible for this contest.
3.  The high point earner in 4-H will receive a $150.00 prize from the Calhoun County Fair.
4.  Contestants will choose a subject from the listed categories.


4-H / FFA Senior (9th - 12th)

​October 15, 2018 @ 6 pm

​1.  This category is for individual presentations only. FFA/4-H member’s presents a 5-7 minute talk suitable as a platform

     speech or radio broadcast. Props and visual aids are not permitted and recordings of any type may not be used.

     Contestants should be prepared to answer questions concerning the subject matter of their presentations.

     Presentations will be scored with equal consideration of composition and delivery utilizing a score sheet specific to the

     public speaking contest.
2.  Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible for this contest.
3.  The high point earner in the 4-H/FFA division will each receive a $1,000.00 scholarship from the Calhoun County Fair in

     their senior year of high school.  Checks will be made out to their college.  The division winner cannot participate in

     successive CCFA public speaking contest in the same division.
4.  Contestants will choose a subject from the listed categories.

Categories

Beef

Related to any phase of the beef cattle industry.

Pork

Relate to approved practices in pork production, marketing or use of pork products.

Sheep and/or Goats

Relate to the production of sheep and/or goats or to the utilization of their meat, milk or fiber.

Farm & Ranch Economics

Relate to management and decision making intended to improve the farm and ranch business.  Emphasis in the presentation should be placed on the economic considerations of topic and how these considerations might influence farmers and ranchers.

Meat Science

Relate to any phase of the red meat industry (beef, pork, lamb) from slaughter through processing/ cooking.  Does not include cooking/recipes.

Horticulture

Relate to any phase of horticulture.  Peanuts, Sunflowers, and cotton seed are not horticulture crops.

Clothing & Textiles

Relate to in formation learned or accomplishment s reached through a clothing and textile project.

   Consumer Science

Demonstrate understanding of the marketplace and personal factors that influence consumer choices.  Basic money management principles on how consumer decisions affect the economy and the environment and/or consumer rights and responsibilities.​

​​Family Life

Demonstrate understanding of family and community factors that influence relationships, positive growth and development, self-esteem and personal responsibilities.

Focus on Health

Relate to any health education topic.

Food & Nutrition

Relate to any aspects of the food and nutrition project.

Housing & Home Environment

Relate presentations to the home environment. Suggested topics include: indoor air or water quality, energy or water conservation, home design & construction, materials & furnishings, household waste management and other issues involved in home buying and selling, care and maintenance.  Purchasing appliances and adapting the home for family members with special needs.

Natural Resources

Relate information to managers of renewable natural resources of land, such as forestry, range, wildlife, outdoor recreation, non-agricultural soil and water or fisheries.  Demonstrations of how to start fires do not qualify in this contest.

Safety & Accident Prevention

Relate to safe equipment designs and safe procedures or methods associated with the prevention of accidents in work, home or recreational environments (e.g. safe methods of designs relative to home, farm or yard machinery equipment, chemicals and animals; prevention of accidents relative to falls, fire electricity, boating, tractors, hunting, natural disasters, or traffic safety.)
